SafeMode

A fleet management app

Improving manager-driver engagement, and making the freight industry safer with cloud based data analysis.

Overview

In 40 hours with SafeMode my project goals were:

-  To identify critical areas of improvement
-  Synthesize findings, make suggestions
-  Design mock-ups for new features

My role was UX Designer in this internship

What I did

01  Primary and secondary research

02  Analyzed their demo and mock-ups

03  Identified 3 important improvements

04  Created 6 mock-up screens of new features

01  Primary and secondary research

I interviewed drivers and managers and scoured internal SafeMode documents, including some competitive analyses. The amount of data was a bit overwhelming. After feeling stuck I decided to make a modified affinity diagram to display all the information that seemed important, with a priority on short quotes from my interviews. I used the corners of a spreadsheet as the poles of a matrix, opposing driver needs against driver solutions, and manager needs vs manager solutions. Making this diagram encouraged me to move forward with some tacit understanding of the data. I was surprised at how much one diagram could help!

02  Analyzing the SafeMode demo

SafeMode provided a confidential demo video which I can't show here. The video comprised a screen reacting to cursor movements, and there was no indication of the intent or result of the activity in the demo.

Baffled, I analyzed the video and I drew a chart (or click path) showing what occurs in the video.

This is the chart of the SafeMode demo:

And this is the same chart, after defining opportunities for features and making recommendations (in green.)

03 Identify App Improvements

I identified the following improvements:

Enlarge the buttons and text components

Add a map of all active drivers

Make a screen comparing driver profile data

Control screen for automated or manual notifications.

Access notifications via widget on dashboard

Present comparative AI data e.g. traffic conditions

04 Create mock-ups

6 mock-ups representing the above recommendations.

Action Notifiers widget for Dashboard

The widgets (the squares at the top of the screen) should also function as buttons.

List screen of Action Notifications

Some text notifications could be automated, with the option to manually send custom texts.

Input screen for text notifications

Auto-entered messages can be customized on the fly.

Comparative AI data, e.g. traffic conditions

Comparing graphs from past and present, with future predictions.

Driver profile comparisons

Overall improvement aggregates are colorized for easy comparison.

All drivers map

A high priority feature requested by users.

What I learned

I was able to overcome feelings of being stuck or overwhelmed - by simply using the UX tools I have available.

It was also a matter of taking the initiative to construct what I felt was the best work I could do, whether or not it fell perfectly within the stated tasks.

I also learned that the benefits of casual collaboration can happen quickly, and that you may not realize it until later. I took cues from seemingly offhand comments during my conversations that led to important steps in the process.
